Mini Lesson

When you write about your day, the reader needs to know what happens first, what comes next, and what happens last. Time-order words are the signposts that guide the reader through your day.

The five time-order words

  • First — the very first thing that happens.
  • Next — what comes right after.
  • Then — the following event.
  • After that — something that comes later.
  • Finally — the last thing in the sequence.

How to use them

  • Put the time-order word at the start of the sentence.
  • Follow it with a comma, then the rest of the sentence.
  • Example: First, I say hello to my mom.

Lesson day vocabulary

  • Events: read, write, count, draw, eat lunch, play outside.
  • Places: lesson table, playground, kitchen, library.
  • People: grown-ups, family, friends.

Add one detail to each sentence

  • A describing word or a with phrase makes each sentence richer.
  • Example: Then, I read a funny book with my family.
  • One good detail is better than no detail at all.

Time-order word
A word that tells when something happens in a sequencee.g. first, next, then, after that, finally
Comma
