Mini Lesson

You have already seen smart tools that help doctors, learners, and artists. Today we are going to look at one more kind — a text-based AI helper. This is a smart tool that you can type a question to, and it writes back an answer in words.

How does it work?

  • A person types a question or instruction — called a prompt — into the tool.
  • The tool has read a huge amount of text from books, websites, and articles. It uses all of that to write a reply.
  • Example: A grown-up types "Explain the water cycle in simple words." The tool writes back a paragraph. The grown-up reads it, checks it, and decides whether to use it.

What a text-based AI helper CAN do

  • Answer questions quickly in clear sentences.
  • Suggest ideas for writing, stories, or projects.
  • Explain complicated topics in simpler words.
  • Help someone brainstorm when they feel stuck.

What it CANNOT do

  • It cannot always be right — it sometimes makes mistakes and states things that are not true.
  • It cannot feel, care, or understand the way a human does.
  • It cannot replace a parent, a coach, or a doctor.
  • It does not know what is happening in the world right now unless it has been updated.

The most important rule

  • Children must only use a text-based AI helper with a trusted adult present.
  • Every answer must be checked by a human before it is used or believed.
How a text-based AI helper worksFour steps arranged left to right with arrows. Step 1: a person types a question. Step 2: the AI helper reads it and writes a reply. Step 3: the reply appears on screen. Step 4: a human checks whether the answer is correct.1. Type2. AI reads3. Reply4. Four steps — a person types a prompt, the AI helper reads its training and writes a reply, the reply appears on screen with a warning that it may contain mistakes, and a human checks it carefully before using it.
What a text-based AI helper can and cannot doTwo columns. Left column in green labeled Can do shows: answer questions in words, suggest ideas, explain things simply, help with brainstorming. Right column in orange labeled Cannot do shows: always be right, feel or care, replace humans, know today's news. Can do• Answer questions in clear words• Suggest ideas for writing or projects• Explain things in simpler words• Help with brainstormingCannot do• Always be right — it makes mistakes• Feel or care like a person• Replace parents, coaches, or doctors• Know what is happening today
What a text-based AI helper can do (answer questions, suggest ideas, explain simply, brainstorm) versus what it cannot do (always be right, feel, replace humans, know current news).
