Mini Lesson

Every invention in the world started with a person who noticed a problem and thought: "How can I fix this?" That one question has changed the world over and over again.

What is an invention?

  • An invention is something new that a person creates to solve a problem or make life better.
  • Inventions can be objects (like the wheel), machines (like the printing press), or ideas (like the internet).
  • Example: Before the telephone, if you wanted to talk to someone far away, you had to write a letter and wait weeks for a reply. The telephone solved that problem in seconds.

Four inventions that changed everything

  • 🛞 The wheel — solved the problem of moving heavy things. Without it, no cars, bicycles, or carts.
  • 📖 The printing press — solved the problem of copying books by hand. Made books available to everyone.
  • 📞 The telephone — solved the problem of slow communication. People could speak to each other across great distances.
  • 🌐 The internet — solved the problem of sharing information. Today we can learn, connect, and create from anywhere in the world.

Inventions build on each other

  • The internet needed electricity. Electricity needed the light bulb. The light bulb needed glass.
  • Every invention stands on the shoulders of inventions that came before it.
