Mini Lesson

A family tree is a special diagram that shows how the people in your family are connected — just like the branches of a real tree!

What does a family tree show?

  • A family tree shows family members and how they are related to each other.
  • Lines connect the members to show who is whose parent or child.
  • Example: Grandma and Grandpa sit at the top because they are the oldest generation.

Three generations

  • A generation is a group of people born around the same time.
  • Generation 1 (top): Grandparents — the oldest members of the tree.
  • Generation 2 (middle): Parents — the children of the grandparents.
  • Generation 3 (bottom): You! — the child of your parents.

Reading the tree

  • The tree grows downward — the oldest generation is at the top.
  • Lines between members show who belongs to whom.
