Families love to come together for special events — these happy times are called celebrations!

What is a celebration?

  • A celebration is a special time when a family gathers to mark a happy event.
  • Example: A birthday party is a celebration when a family gathers to honor someone's special day.
  • Celebrations often include food, music, decorations, and gifts.

Types of family celebrations

  • Birthdays — we celebrate the day a person was born.
  • Holidays — special days on the calendar celebrated by many families, such as Thanksgiving or New Year's Day.
  • Religious celebrations — special events tied to a family's faith, such as Eid, Christmas, Diwali, or Hanukkah.
  • Family milestones — events like a graduation or a new baby joining the family.

What is a tradition?

  • A tradition is something a family does the same way, year after year, for a special occasion.
  • Example: blowing out candles on a birthday cake, or eating a special meal every Thanksgiving.
