Lesson 84: Skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s

🧮 MATH (40 Lessons)🟢 A. Numbers and Counting

← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s to 100 and use patterns on a number line or 100 chart.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s

Skip counting means we do not count every number. We jump forward using the same step each time.

Skip count by 2s

  • We add 2 each time.
  • We say: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10…
  • We can count pairs of shoes, socks, or eyes.

Skip count by 5s

  • We add 5 each time.
  • We say: 5, 10, 15, 20…
  • We can count hands or star points.

Skip count by 10s

  • We add 10 each time.
  • We say: 10, 20, 30, 40…
  • We can count groups or bundles of ten.

Skip counting helps us count faster and prepares us for multiplication in the future.

Guided Practice — Hop & Count

You will skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s using a number line made on the floor or on your desk with number cards.

  1. Lay out number cards: Place numbers in a line (0, 10, 20, 30… up to 100).
  2. Choose a rule: Pick by 2s, by 5s, or by 10s.
  3. Hop and count: Step or point to the numbers and say them aloud.
  4. Switch the rule: Try a new skip count rule and hop again.
  5. Trace on the pad: Pick a skip count number (like 20, 40, 50, 80) and trace it neatly.

Practice 1 — Drag & Drop: Complete the skip-count pattern

For each row, drag the numbers into the boxes to show the pattern in order. Say the pattern out loud as you build it.

1) Skip count by 2s from 2 to 10.

2) Skip count by 2s from 12 to 20.

181420 1612

3) Skip count by 2s starting at 7.

11715 139

4) Skip count by 5s from 5 to 25.

5) Skip count by 5s from 30 to 50.

354540 3050

6) Skip count by 10s from 10 to 50.

7) Skip count by 10s from 30 to 70.

8) Skip count by 2s starting at 36.

9) Skip count by 5s from 50 to 70.

10) Skip count by 10s from 60 to 100.

Practice 2 — Number line skip counting

On each number line, keep the skip-count pattern going. Tap the correct next number.

1) 2, 4, 6, 8, __

Tap the next number when you count by 2s.

2) 11, 13, 15, __

Tap the next number when you count by 2s.

3) 5, 10, 15, 20, __

Tap the next number when you count by 5s.

4) 30, 35, 40, 45, __

Tap the next number when you count by 5s.

5) 10, 20, 30, 40, __

Tap the next number when you count by 10s.

6) 40, 50, 60, __

Tap the next number when you count by 10s.

7) 20, __, 24

Tap the number that belongs in the pattern by 2s.

8) 30, __, 40

Tap the number that belongs in the pattern by 5s.

9) 48, 50, __

Tap the next number when you count by 2s.

10) 70, 80, 90, __

Tap the next number when you count by 10s.

Practice 3 — Sliders: Move to the next skip-count number

Read the pattern. Move the slider until the current number matches the next number in the pattern.

1) By 2s from 14

Slide to the next number: 14, __. Move to 16.

Current: 0

2) By 2s from 29

Slide to the next number: 29, __. Move to 31.

Current: 0

3) By 5s from 10

Slide to the next number: 10, __. Move to 15.

Current: 0

4) By 5s from 35

Slide to the next number: 35, __. Move to 40.

Current: 0

5) By 10s from 20

Slide to the next number: 20, __. Move to 30.

Current: 0

6) By 10s from 70

Slide to the next number: 70, __. Move to 80.

Current: 0

7) By 2s: what comes after 48?

Slide to 50.

Current: 0

8) By 5s: what comes after 55?

Slide to 60.

Current: 0

9) By 10s: what comes after 90?

Slide to 100.

Current: 0

10) By 2s: just before 100

Start at 92, 94, 96, 98, __. Slide to 100.

Current: 0
