Mission Briefing — Counting forward and backward to 100

In this lesson, you practice counting forward and backward between 0 and 100. You use a hundred chart and a number line to see how numbers go in order.

Counting forward (up)

  • When you count forward, the numbers get bigger.
  • You say: 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42…
  • On a number line, you move to the right.

Counting backward (down)

  • When you count backward, the numbers get smaller.
  • You say: 42, 41, 40, 39, 38, 37…
  • On a number line, you move to the left.

Hundred chart and tens lines

  • A hundred chart shows numbers from 1 to 100 in rows of 10.
  • Going across a row, you count forward by ones.
  • Going down a column, you jump forward by tens (10, 20, 30, 40…).

When you practice, always say the numbers out loud and point carefully so you do not skip or repeat any number.

Training Run — Counting on and back with real objects

Tap to play and Pause.

Count a few small objects one by one, touching each as you say the number. Now point to a number like twenty on your chart and count forward, then backward. Take your time and repeat it once more. When you’re ready, open the tracing pad and write one number you counted. Try another number after that. Say each number as you write it.
