Materials

Mini-lesson — Reading games we can play together

Sometimes we read alone. Sometimes we read with one partner. We can also read in a small group and play reading games together.

Group reading games make reading fun and help everyone practice.

Here are some simple group reading games:

  • Echo reading: The teacher or leader reads a sentence. The group echoes by reading the same sentence back.
  • Choral reading: Everyone in the group reads the same part together at the same time.
  • Popcorn reading: One reader starts and then says “Popcorn, Mia!” to choose the next reader in a kind way.
  • Word hunt: The leader says, “Find the word because on this page,” and the group quickly and quietly looks for it.

In every group reading game, we:

  • use quiet voices that do not bother other groups
  • follow the rules of the game
  • do not make fun of anyone
  • help each other feel safe and brave to read

You can use these frames:

“We are playing echo reading. I will listen and then read it back.”

“We are playing choral reading. I will read together with my group.”

Today, you will learn how group reading games work and how to be a kind group reader.

Mini-Book: Group reading games

1

Echo reading

The group sits in a circle. The leader reads one sentence from the story.

Everyone listens, then the whole group reads the same sentence back like an echo.

This game helps readers hear how the sentence should sound and then try it themselves.

2

Choral reading

In choral reading, the whole group reads the words together at the same time.

The leader points under the words so everyone knows where to look.

This game helps readers feel brave because they are reading with others.

3

Popcorn reading

In popcorn reading, one reader starts and reads a short part.

When they finish, they say “Popcorn,” then a friend's name to pass the reading.

Readers choose names kindly so everyone gets a turn.

4

Word hunt game

In a word hunt, the leader says, “Find the word because on this page.”

Everyone quietly searches with their finger and stops when they find it.

Which group reading game would you like to try first?
