Sometimes we read alone. Sometimes we read with one partner. We can also read in a small group and play reading games together.
Group reading games make reading fun and help everyone practice.
Here are some simple group reading games:
- Echo reading: The teacher or leader reads a sentence. The group echoes by reading the same sentence back.
- Choral reading: Everyone in the group reads the same part together at the same time.
- Popcorn reading: One reader starts and then says “Popcorn, Mia!” to choose the next reader in a kind way.
- Word hunt: The leader says, “Find the word because on this page,” and the group quickly and quietly looks for it.
In every group reading game, we:
- use quiet voices that do not bother other groups
- follow the rules of the game
- do not make fun of anyone
- help each other feel safe and brave to read
You can use these frames:
“We are playing echo reading. I will listen and then read it back.”
“We are playing choral reading. I will read together with my group.”
Today, you will learn how group reading games work and how to be a kind group reader.
