Read simple nonfiction facts about the Earth and tell what each fact is mostly about (land, water, air, or living things).

Materials

Mini-lesson — Nonfiction facts about the Earth

Our planet is called Earth. Nonfiction texts can teach us true facts about the Earth.

Facts about the Earth can be about:

  • land — rocks, soil, mountains, and sand
  • water — oceans, lakes, rivers, and ponds
  • air and sky — clouds, wind, and the atmosphere
  • living things — plants, animals, and people

Nonfiction Earth texts often have:

  • a title like “Our Earth” or “Water on Earth”
  • pictures or photos of Earth, land, and water
  • labels that name parts like ocean or mountain

Good readers of Earth facts:

  • read the title and think, “What is this mostly about?”
  • look for key words like land, water, air, plant, animal
  • use pictures and labels to understand the fact
