Materials

Mini-lesson — Signs and labels give us information

Words do not only live in books. We see words all around us on doors, boxes, streets, and walls. These short bits of print are called signs and labels.

Signs and labels help us by:

  • using only a few words or symbols
  • showing what to do, where to go, or what something is

You see them in many places:

  • On streets: STOP, BUS, SCHOOL
  • In buildings: EXIT, BATHROOM
  • On packages: MILK, PASTA, TOYS

Good readers look carefully and ask:

  • “What does it say?”
  • “What does it mean?”

You do not guess just from the color. You use:

  • the words
  • the pictures or symbols
  • where the sign or label is placed

You can use this sentence frame:

“It says _____. It means _____.”

Today, you will read tiny signs and labels and practice saying what they say and what they mean.
