Lesson 271: Explore how to make learning fun with tech

💡 TECHNOLOGY & FUTURE SKILLS (40 Lessons)🟣 D. Creating with Technology

← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can name ways that technology makes learning fun, like practising reading, maths, or languages. I can remember that people choose learning tools, set screen time rules, and are in charge of devices.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Tech can help learning feel fun

Technology can help us learn and practise skills. Some apps feel like games, but they teach too.

Examples of learning with tech

  • A reading app that reads aloud and lets you tap words.
  • A maths game where you solve sums to move a character.
  • A language app that helps you say words in another language.
  • A science video that shows how plants grow or stars move.

People choose learning tools

  • Adults pick apps that match your age and school rules.
  • We do not just click any video or game we see.
  • We ask: "Does this help me learn?"

Tech is a helper, not the boss

  • Devices do not get to choose your bedtime.
  • Apps do not decide what is kind or safe.
  • People set rules, give breaks, and say when to stop.

Taking breaks keeps learning healthy

  • Eyes need rest from bright screens.
  • Bodies need movement and outside time.
  • We follow family rules like "After this game, we have a break."

Adults can say: "We will use tech to help learning feel fun, but people are in charge of screens, not the other way around."

Guided Practice — Sort "fun learning" and "just for fun"

Use this talk activity to help your child notice which tech activities help learning and which are just for fun.

  1. On paper, draw two boxes. Label one "Fun learning" and the other "Just for fun".
  2. Ask your child to name tech activities they know: watching cartoons, a reading app, a maths game, video calls with family, a silly video, etc.
  3. For each example, ask: "Does this help you learn?" If yes, draw or write it in the Fun learning box. If not, put it in the Just for fun box.
  4. Remind your child that both boxes are okay, but we need rules so screens do not take over the day.
  5. Together, circle two tech activities that help learning most, like a reading app or maths game.
  6. Say: "These are tools that help your brain grow. We will choose good times to use them and take breaks when time is up."

Practice — My "learning with tech" plan

Use this page to help your child make a simple plan for fun learning with tech that still follows family rules.

  1. On a new page, write the title: "My learning with tech plan".
  2. Ask your child to draw two tech tools that help them learn, such as a reading app and a maths game.
  3. Under the first picture, help them write a short sentence like: "I use this app to practise reading."
  4. Under the second picture, write a sentence like: "I use this game to practise numbers."
  5. At the bottom of the page, add: "We follow family rules and take breaks from screens."
  6. Read the plan together. Ask: "Who is in charge of screens in our home?" Help your child answer: "Our trusted adults and us, not the tablet."
  7. Put the page near your learning area as a reminder that tech can help learning, but people set the rules.
