Materials

Mini-lesson — Parts of a thank-you note

A thank-you note is a short message you write to tell someone you are thankful.

Most thank-you notes have three main parts:

  1. Greeting: A kind hello at the top.
    Example: Dear Mom,
  2. Thank-you message: One or two short sentences that say what you are thankful for and sometimes why.
Example: Thank you for making my birthday special.
  3. Closing: A kind word and your name at the end.
    Example: Love, Sam

You can write thank-you notes for many things: a gift, a favor, help, or kindness.

When you write a thank-you note, remember:

  • Start the greeting and sentences with capital letters.
  • Use kind words like "Thank you" and "I am thankful for".
  • Use spaces between your words and end sentences with a period or exclamation mark.

A thank-you note does not need to be long. It just needs to be clear, true, and kind.

Guided Practice — Plan one thank-you note

Use the Tracing Pad to warm up with thank-you words. Then write your own thank-you note on paper.

  1. Choose a person: Who will get your thank-you note? (For example: Mom, Dad, a friend, a teacher, a coach, or a neighbor.)
  2. Trace thank-you words: On the Tracing Pad, choose words like thank, gift, help, kind, or friend and trace them slowly.
  3. Plan with your voice: Say out loud:
    • what you are thankful for, and
    • why you are thankful.
  4. Write on paper: On your ruled paper, write:
    • a greeting line (Dear + name),
    • one or two short thank-you sentences,
    • a closing with your name.
  5. Add a tiny picture: Draw a small heart, smile, flower, or another kind symbol next to your note.
  6. Check your work: Did you tell what you are thankful for? Did you use capitals, spaces, and punctuation?

The Tracing Pad is only for warm-up. Your finished thank-you note must be written on your paper.
