Lesson 246: Explore technology that helps at home and school

💡 TECHNOLOGY & FUTURE SKILLS (40 Lessons)Section A — Technology Around Us

← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can name technology that helps at home and at school, and say simple rules for using it safely, fairly, and with breaks.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Technology that helps us

Technology means tools that use electricity, machines, or computers to help people.

Helpful technology at home

  • Washing machines help clean clothes.
  • Fridges keep food cold and safe.
  • Ovens help cook food evenly.
  • Vacuum cleaners help clean floors.

Helpful technology at school

  • Projectors or big screens help everyone see the same thing.
  • Computers or tablets help with writing, drawing, and learning games.
  • Printers help make copies of work.

How technology helps

  • It can make jobs faster or easier.
  • It can help us learn and share information.
  • It can help us stay safe (for example, smoke alarms or traffic lights).

Technology is a helper, not the boss

  • People choose when to use technology.
  • People can unplug or turn things off.
  • We can still do many things without screens or devices.

Safe and fair use

  • Use devices with a trusted adult nearby, especially for internet tools.
  • Take breaks for your eyes, body, and mind.
  • Share fairly with others so everyone gets a turn.

Choosing when to use technology

  • Good times: learning, talking to family far away, or doing homework.
  • Break times: meals, bedtime, and when your body needs to move.
  • We can ask: "Is this a good moment for a device?"

Adults can say: "Technology can help us at home and at school, and we will decide together when and how to use it."

Guided Practice — Home and school helpers

You and an adult will make a simple chart of technology helpers at home and at school.

  1. On a page, draw a big T-chart with two columns. Label one side "Home" and the other side "School".
  2. In the Home column, help your child draw or write 3 helpful tools (for example, washing machine, fridge, vacuum, or a smart speaker).
  3. In the School column, draw or write 3 helpful tools (for example, projector, printer, tablet, or classroom computer).
  4. Next to each tool, add one word for how it helps, such as "clean", "learn", "print", or "safe".
  5. Talk together about the chart. Ask: "Which tools help our bodies?" and "Which tools help our minds?"
  6. Circle any tools that use screens. Decide one good time to use them and one time when it is better to take a break.
  7. Say a sentence together, such as: "Technology helps us at home and school, and we choose safe times to use it."

Practice — My helpful tech map

Use this practice to help your child think about where technology helps and when to use it.

  1. On a new page, draw a simple map with two main places: "Home" and "School".
  2. Under Home, help your child draw one room that uses technology (for example, the kitchen or living room) and add one device there.
  3. Under School, draw a classroom and add one device there (for example, a screen, printer, or tablet cart).
  4. Next to each device, add a small picture or word that shows how it helps (such as a sparkle for "clean", a book for "learn", or a heart for "care").
  5. At the bottom of the map, draw a small sun and moon. Under the sun, write or trace one good time to use technology. Under the moon, write or trace one time when it is better to rest.
  6. Read the map together and say: "Technology can help us at home and school, and we can choose healthy times to use it."
  7. Put the map near a device area as a reminder of helpful and healthy tech use.
