Objective

I can name some simple healthy habits and plan a small, kind habits challenge. I can notice how my choices help my body and mind.

Materials

Mini-lesson — What are healthy habits?

A habit is something we do over and over. A healthy habit helps our body and mind feel well.

Healthy habits for the body

  • Sleep at a good time and wake up rested.
  • Move our bodies with play and exercise.
  • Drink water during the day.
  • Eat a mix of foods, including fruit and veg.

Healthy habits for the mind

  • Take breaks when we feel tired.
  • Use kind self-talk, like "I can try".
  • Have quiet time to rest our thoughts.
  • Talk to a trusted adult when worried.

Screens and balance

  • Screens can be fun and helpful.
  • Too much screen time can make it hard to sleep or move.
  • We can have screen time with limits and also time to play, read, and move.

Habits are not about being perfect

  • We will forget sometimes. That is normal.
  • We can notice and say, "I will try again tomorrow".
  • We celebrate effort, not only perfect days.

Family habits

  • Families can choose one or two healthy habits to try together.
  • Adults help make sure habits are safe and kind.
  • We can have a short healthy habits challenge and clap for every small step.

Adults can say: "Healthy habits are small, kind choices we repeat. We do not need to be perfect. We just keep trying together."

Guided Practice — Plan our healthy habits challenge

You and an adult will plan a gentle healthy habits challenge for a few days.

  1. Talk together about healthy habits that feel right for your family (for example, sleep, water, movement, or teeth).
  2. On a page, draw a big rectangle and write or trace the title "Healthy habits" at the top.
  3. Draw three rows down the page. In the first column, draw a small picture for each habit you choose (for example, bed, glass, running person).
  4. In the next columns, draw small boxes for three days of the challenge. Each box is a place for a tick or sticker.
  5. Agree on a gentle rule such as: "We will try our best. If we forget, we can try again tomorrow."
  6. Each time the child does one habit, they add a tick, dot, or sticker in that box.
  7. At the end of the challenge, look at the chart together and talk about: "Which habit felt easiest?" and "Which habit would you like to keep?"

Practice — My "healthy me" picture

Use this practice to help your child picture themselves using healthy habits.

  1. On a new page, draw a big picture of yourself in the middle. Add a smile and something you enjoy, like a book or a ball.
  2. Around your picture, draw four small circles. In each circle, draw one healthy habit, such as sleeping, drinking water, brushing teeth, or moving your body.
  3. With an adult, write or trace a short word near each circle, such as "sleep", "water", "teeth", or "move".
  4. At the bottom of the page, write or trace the sentence "I can try healthy habits".
  5. Talk together about which habit already feels strong for you and which habit you would like to practise more.
  6. Choose one habit and say: "This is the habit I will practise first". Draw a tiny star next to that habit.
  7. Keep the picture where you can see it, and add a small dot or star each time you notice yourself using one of your habits.
