← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can talk about how to play team games in a kind way. I can work with teammates, take turns, and use gentle words when I win or lose.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Playing in a team

A team game is a game where people play together on the same side.

What does a team do?

  • Works together to reach a goal.
  • Shares space and equipment.
  • Listens to ideas and plans.
  • Encourages each other with kind words.

Team rules that help everyone

  • Take turns with the ball or equipment.
  • Use kind words like "Nice try" or "Good pass".
  • Play fairly and follow the rules.
  • Include others, do not leave people out.

Winning and losing kindly

  • When we win, we can say "Good game" and thank the other team.
  • When we lose, we can say "Good game" and notice what we did well.
  • We do not brag or make fun of anyone.

Jobs on a team

  • Some people pass the ball.
  • Some people guard or watch an area.
  • Some people cheer and give kind words.
  • Every job is important. All teammates matter.

Team talk

  • "I can pass to you next."
  • "Are you ready? Here it comes."
  • "Let us try again together."
  • "Thank you for being on my team."

Adults can say: "In team games we watch how we talk and move, so that everyone feels safe and included."

Guided Practice — Our team game plan

You and an adult will plan a very simple team game you can play together or with friends.

  1. Choose a game that uses teams: for example, passing a soft ball in a circle, relay races, or rolling a ball to knock down soft targets.
  2. On a page, draw two small groups of stick figures to show the teams.
  3. Together, choose 3 team rules that keep everyone safe and happy (for example, "We take turns", "We use kind words", "We cheer for everyone").
  4. Write or trace the 3 team rules under the picture. The adult can write first and the child traces.
  5. Practise one round of the game slowly. Stop and notice when someone uses team talk or kind actions.
  6. After one or two rounds, pause and ask: "How did it feel to be on a team?" and "What helped the game feel fair?"
  7. Add one more idea if needed, such as "We say 'Good game' when we stop."

Practice — My team game reminder poster

Use this practice to help your child remember how to be a kind teammate during games.

  1. On a new page, draw a big rectangle. At the top, write or trace the title "Team game reminders".
  2. Inside the rectangle, draw three simple pictures in a row: sharing, taking turns, and kind words.
  3. Under the sharing picture, add a short label such as "We share the ball" or "We share the space".
  4. Under the taking turns picture, add a label such as "We wait for our turn".
  5. Under the kind words picture, add a label such as "We say good game" or "Nice try".
  6. Add small hearts or stars around the poster to show that these actions are important for the team.
  7. Before the next game, read the poster together and ask: "Which reminder will you try to follow first?"
