Lesson 200: Social studies fair

🟡 SOCIAL STUDIES (40 Lessons)🟠 E. Projects

← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can help prepare a simple social studies fair. I can choose work to share, make a small display, and practise being a kind presenter and a kind listener.

Materials

Mini-lesson — What is a social studies fair?

A social studies fair is a time to share what we have learned about people, places, and caring.

Sharing our learning

  • We choose one thing we are proud of from social studies.
  • It might be a map picture, a community poster, a recycling project, or another simple page.
  • We put it on a small display area, like a table or wall at home or school.

Being a presenter

  • A presenter stands by their work.
  • They say their name and tell what their project is about.
  • They speak in a clear, kind voice.

Being a listener

  • A listener looks at the speaker and the project.
  • They listen quietly while the presenter talks.
  • They can ask one simple question, like "What was your favourite part?"

Respect for everyone

  • All projects get kind words, even if they are different.
  • We do not laugh at mistakes. We are all still learning.
  • The fair is a time to say "Well done" and celebrate learning.

Your fair can be very small (just you and an adult at home) or a little bigger (several children together). The big idea is to share learning kindly.

Guided Practice — Plan your fair display

You will plan a small social studies fair display with an adult.

  1. Look through your Level 1 social studies work with an adult. Choose one page or project you are proud of.
  2. On a notebook page, draw a simple box and label it "My fair display".
  3. Inside the box, sketch where you will put your main project, your name label, and a small title.
  4. Next to the box, the adult helps you write or trace a short script that begins: "Hello, my name is…" and "My project is about…".
  5. Practise saying your script aloud to the adult, using a clear, kind voice.
  6. Decide with the adult where your fair display will go (for example, on a table, a shelf, or a wall at home or school).

Practice — Hold your mini social studies fair

With an adult, use your plan to hold a mini social studies fair. This can be very simple.

  1. With an adult's help, put your chosen project and your fair display page in the spot you planned.
  2. Make a small name label with your first name and place it near your work.
  3. Invite the adult (and maybe one or two family members) to walk around as visitors to your fair.
  4. When it is your turn, stand by your project and use your presenter script to share what you learned.
  5. Switch roles for a moment. Let the adult pretend to be the presenter and you pretend to be the listener. Practise looking, listening, and asking one kind question.
  6. At the end, everyone shares one sentence such as "I am proud of…" or "I liked learning about…".
