Objective

I can help plan a simple cultural celebration day with an adult. I can say that people have different traditions and use kind words to talk about how we celebrate.

Materials

Mini-lesson — What is culture and a celebration day?

Culture is how people live, celebrate, eat, dress, and share stories and music.

Parts of culture

  • Foods people eat and share.
  • Clothes people wear for every day or special days.
  • Music, dance, and stories people enjoy.
  • Traditions or celebrations that come again each year.

Different and special

  • Families can have different traditions, even in the same country.
  • Some people may celebrate special days in different ways.
  • Different does not mean better or worse. It just means not the same.

Cultural celebration day

  • A cultural celebration day is a time to share and learn about different cultures in a kind way.
  • We might show music, pictures, stories, or foods that are important to our families, with an adult's help.
  • We follow school or family rules so everyone feels safe and respected.

In this lesson, we keep our celebration ideas simple, respectful, and age-appropriate. An adult guides what to share and how to share it.

Guided Practice — Plan your celebration day

You will plan a simple cultural celebration day page with an adult.

  1. On a notebook page, write or trace the title: "Cultural celebration day plan".
  2. Draw three small boxes and label them "Food or drink", "Music or dance", and "Story, picture, or object".
  3. Talk with an adult about safe things you could share or learn in each box. For example, a picture of a special food, a song from your culture, or a story your family tells.
  4. Sketch one idea in each box. Keep it simple and respectful.
  5. Under each box, the adult helps you write or trace a short sentence, such as "We listen to music from different cultures."
  6. Read your plan aloud to an adult. Check that every idea is kind, safe, and follows your family or school rules.

Practice — Create your cultural celebration day page

Use your plan to make a celebration day page that shows kind, respectful ways to share culture.

  1. On large paper, write or trace the title at the top: "Our cultural celebration day".
  2. Divide the page into three sections and label them "Food or drink", "Music or dance", and "Stories or objects".
  3. In each section, draw a clear picture that matches one idea from your plan. For example, a plate of special food, people dancing, or a story book.
  4. Under each picture, write or trace a short sentence that begins with "We can…", such as "We can listen to music from different cultures."
  5. Add small hearts, stars, or flags around the border if you like, but keep all faces and bodies kind and respectful.
  6. Share your page with an adult. Read each sentence aloud and talk about how your cultural celebration day will help people feel welcome and respected.
