Lesson 184: Caring for the Earth together

🟡 SOCIAL STUDIES (40 Lessons)🟣 D. Responsibility and Citizenship

← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can name simple ways to care for the Earth, like saving water, not wasting paper, and putting rubbish in the bin, and I can tell how my family can help too.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Our shared home

The Earth is our shared home. People, plants, and animals all live here together.

Why we care for the Earth

  • We need clean air to breathe.
  • We need clean water to drink and wash.
  • We need plants and animals to stay healthy and happy.

Simple ways children can help

  • Turn off the tap while brushing teeth so water is not wasted.
  • Turn off lights when you leave a room.
  • Use both sides of paper, or use scrap paper, so we do not waste trees.

Taking care of places

  • Put rubbish in bins at home, at school, and in parks.
  • Leave plants, trees, and flowers safe. We do not break them for fun.
  • Respect animals. We do not chase or scare them on purpose.

Doing it together

  • Families, schools, and communities can all be Earth helpers.
  • Small actions from many people can make a big difference.
  • We can remind each other kindly, not in a mean way.

This lesson stays hopeful. We focus on simple actions children can do at home, at school, and outside.

Guided Practice — Our family Earth helper plan

You will make a simple Earth helper plan for your family.

  1. Draw a big heart in the middle of your page. Inside the heart, draw a small Earth (a circle with some land and water).
  2. Around the heart, draw three boxes or circles. In each one, you will plan one way to help the Earth.
  3. In the first box, draw or write a water habit, such as "Turn off the tap while brushing teeth."
  4. In the second box, draw or write a rubbish habit, such as "Put litter in the bin." or "Recycle bottles." if your family does this.
  5. In the third box, draw or write a nature habit, such as "Be gentle with plants." or "Feed animals safely with an adult."
  6. Under your picture, write or trace this sentence: "We can help the Earth together."
  7. Share your plan with an adult at home. Ask which habit your family will try this week.

Practice — Talk about Earth helper choices

Use your home or classroom to notice Earth helper choices you can make every day.

  1. Walk around one room with an adult. Point to things that use water, light, or paper.
  2. For each thing, say one way to be an Earth helper. For example, "We turn off this light when we leave."
  3. Look out of a window or visit a safe outdoor space. Can you see plants, trees, or animals? Talk about how to be gentle with them.
  4. Talk about bins in your home or school. Where do you put rubbish so it does not end up on the ground?
  5. At the end, say one sentence about yourself, such as "I can help the Earth by _______."
