Objective

I can show that my body has different systems, like the heart and lungs, that work together, and make a simple collage to label some of these parts.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Simple body systems that work together

Your body is made of many parts that work together. We can group some parts into systems.

What is a body system?

  • A system is a group of parts that work together.
  • Your body has many systems that keep you alive and active.
  • In this lesson we think about four simple systems.

Heart and blood (circulation)

  • Your heart is a strong muscle inside your chest.
  • It pumps blood around your body.
  • Blood carries oxygen and food to the body's cells.

Lungs (breathing)

  • Your lungs are inside your chest.
  • You use them to breathe air in and out.
  • They bring in oxygen that your blood carries around your body.

Muscles (movement)

  • Muscles help you move.
  • They pull on your bones so you can run, jump, or wave.
  • Some muscles work all the time, like the heart.

Bones (support)

  • Bones are hard and strong inside your body.
  • They make a frame called a skeleton.
  • Your skeleton helps you stand up, sit, and move.

Working together

  • When you run, your heart, lungs, muscles, and bones all work together.
  • You need rest, healthy food, and movement to help these systems stay strong.

A body system collage is a fun way to show and label some of the important parts inside you.

Guided Practice — Make a simple body system collage

You will build a collage that shows some of your body systems and label them with an adult.

  1. Draw a body outline: On a large sheet of paper, draw a simple body outline from head to legs. It can be a stick person with a bigger middle.
  2. Add the heart and lungs: In the chest area, draw or glue a red heart and two light blue lungs. Label them "heart" and "lungs".
  3. Show muscles: On the arms or legs, draw simple muscles or glue strips of coloured paper. Add the label "muscles".
  4. Show bones: Draw a few white bones or stick white paper strips on the arms, legs, or middle. Label them "bones" or "skeleton".
  5. Add arrows and short notes: Use arrows and write small notes such as "Heart pumps blood" or "Lungs help me breathe".
  6. Use the tracing pad: Choose words like heart, lungs, muscles, bones, body, or system and trace them slowly.
  7. Share your collage: Show your collage to an adult and point to each part as you say its name.

Practice 1 — Match body parts to their jobs

Practise linking simple body parts to what they do.

  1. On a page, draw four small boxes and label them "Heart", "Lungs", "Muscles", and "Bones".
  2. In each box, draw a small picture to remind you of that part (for example a heart shape, two lung shapes, an arm with muscle, or a bone).
  3. Under each drawing, write or copy one short job, such as "Heart pumps blood" or "Bones help me stand".
  4. Colour each box a different colour to help you remember the four parts.
  5. With an adult, point to each box and say the name and job out loud.

Practice 2 — My body systems working together

Think about how your body systems work together when you move and play.

  1. Draw yourself doing a favourite movement, such as running, jumping, or skating.
  2. Around the picture, write the words "heart", "lungs", "muscles", and "bones".
  3. Draw arrows from each word to your body and add a tiny note, such as "Heart beats faster" or "Muscles pull to move my legs".
  4. At the bottom of the page, write one sentence that starts with "My body systems work together when I…".
  5. Tell an adult what happens to your breathing and heart when you run or play hard.

Practice 3 — Healthy habits for my body systems

Think about healthy habits that help your body systems.

  1. Fold a page into three columns and label them "Move", "Rest", and "Eat & drink".
  2. In the "Move" column, draw or write two ways you like to move your body, such as cycling or playing ball.
  3. In the "Rest" column, draw or write two calm things that help your body rest, such as sleeping or reading quietly.
  4. In the "Eat & drink" column, draw or write some foods and drinks that help keep you healthy, such as water, fruit, or vegetables.
  5. At the bottom of the page, finish the sentence "I will try to…" with one healthy habit that you want to practise more.

Quick Check — Body system collage

Answer each question about body systems and how they work together.

1) What is a body system?

A body system is a group of parts that work together.

2) Which body part pumps blood around your body?

Your heart is a strong muscle that pumps blood.

3) What do your lungs help you do?

Your lungs help you breathe air in and out.

4) Which body parts pull on your bones so you can move?

Muscles pull on bones so you can move.

5) Your bones and skeleton help you…

Bones make a strong frame that helps you stand and move.

6) When you run, what happens to your heart?

When you run, your heart beats faster to move blood around your body.

7) Which body system is mostly about breathing?

The lungs are part of the system that helps you breathe.

8) In your collage, why is it helpful to label the heart, lungs, muscles, and bones?

Labels help you remember the names of the body parts.

9) Which sentence is an observation about your body after running?

This sentence describes what you feel and notice in your body.

10) Which habit can help keep your body systems healthy?

Moving, resting, and eating healthy foods support your body systems.

11) Which list shows body parts from this lesson?

Heart, lungs, muscles, and bones are body parts we learned about.

12) A child says, "My heart, lungs, muscles, and bones help me when I jump." What are they talking about?

They are noticing that different body systems work together to move.

13) Why is a collage a good science project for this lesson?

A collage lets you show and label the body parts clearly.

14) Which set of words all match this lesson?

Body, heart, lungs, and system all belong to this body systems lesson.

15) Why is it helpful for children to learn about body systems?

Knowing about body systems helps children understand and look after their bodies.
