🔬 SCIENCE (40 Lessons)🔵 B. The Earth and Sky

← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can tell how different kinds of weather affect what I wear, what I do, and how I stay safe. I can use words like sunny, rainy, windy, hot, and cold to explain my choices.

Materials

Mini-lesson — How does weather affect us?

Weather is what the sky and air are like outside each day. Weather can change how we feel, what we wear, and what we do.

Kinds of weather

  • Sunny — the sun is out and the sky may be blue.
  • Cloudy — clouds cover some or all of the sky.
  • Rainy — clouds bring rain.
  • Windy — there is moving air.
  • Stormy — strong wind, heavy rain, and sometimes thunder and lightning.

Hot, warm, cool, and cold

  • On hot days we might sweat and feel very warm.
  • On warm days we feel comfortable in light clothes.
  • On cool or cold days we may need a jumper or coat.

Weather and what we wear

  • Sunny and hot: we might wear a hat, short sleeves, and use shade.
  • Rainy: we might wear a raincoat, boots, and carry an umbrella.
  • Cold: we might wear a coat, scarf, and gloves.

Weather and what we do

  • On pleasant days we might play outside.
  • On very rainy or stormy days we might stay indoors and choose indoor games.
  • On very hot days we may need to rest in the shade and drink water.

Weather is part of our everyday life. When we notice the weather and think about it, we can make good choices about clothes, play, and safety.

Guided Practice — Weather, clothes, and choices

You will think about today's weather and choose clothes and activities that match it. Use simple words to explain your choices.

  1. Look outside: With an adult, look out of a window or step outside. Is it sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy, or stormy?
  2. Feel the air: Does it feel hot, warm, cool, or cold? Say how it feels on your skin.
  3. Pick clothes: Choose a picture or real items that match the weather (for example, hat and short sleeves for sunny, or coat and boots for rainy).
  4. Pick an activity: Decide if you would play outside or inside. Name one safe activity for this weather.
  5. Draw two pictures: On your paper, draw today's weather and yourself in clothes that fit it. Add a small label like "warm and sunny" or "rainy and cool".
  6. Use the tracing pad: Choose words like sunny, rainy, windy, or cold from the dropdown and trace them slowly. Say the word as you write.
  7. Finish with a sentence: Write one sentence such as "Today is sunny so I wear a hat" or "It is cold so I need my coat".

Practice 1 — Weather and clothes match

Match kinds of weather with clothes that keep you comfortable and safe.

  1. Draw three columns and label them: "Sunny", "Rainy", and "Cold".
  2. Under Sunny, draw or write clothes like sun hat, T-shirt, shorts.
  3. Under Rainy, draw or write clothes like raincoat, boots, umbrella.
  4. Under Cold, draw or write clothes like coat, scarf, gloves.
  5. Circle one outfit in each column that you would choose to wear.

Practice 2 — Weather and activities

Decide which activities fit different kinds of weather.

Practice 3 — Weather story: changing plans

Tell a short story about how the weather changed and you had to change your plans.

  1. Draw a picture of a child ready to play outside in one kind of weather (for example, sunny and warm).
  2. Next to it, draw a second picture of the same child after the weather changes (for example, it starts to rain or becomes cold).
  3. Write (or say) one or two sentences, such as: "It was sunny so I went to the park, but then it rained so I played a game inside".
  4. Share your story with someone and point to the clues in your pictures that show the weather changing.
