Lesson 130: Weather and seasons

🔬 SCIENCE (40 Lessons)🔵 B. The Earth and Sky

← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can name common kinds of weather and the four seasons. I can say how weather changes what we wear and what we do in each season.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Weather and seasons

Weather is what the sky and air are like today. Weather can change from day to day.

Common kinds of weather

  • Sunny — the sun is out and the sky is mostly clear.
  • Cloudy — the sky is covered with clouds.
  • Rainy — rain falls from the clouds.
  • Windy — the air is moving and can feel strong.

Seasons

  • Spring — many plants start to grow again.
  • Summer — days are usually warmer and sometimes hot.
  • Autumn — some leaves change colour and fall.
  • Winter — days are often colder, and some places get snow.

Weather and what we do

  • On a rainy day we might wear a coat and use an umbrella.
  • On a sunny summer day we might wear a hat and play outside.
  • On a cold winter day we might wear a warm coat and gloves.

Seasons follow a pattern that repeats every year: spring, summer, autumn, winter, then back to spring again.

Guided Practice — Talk about today's weather

You will look at the weather today and use simple words to describe it. Then you will link it to a season.

  1. Look outside: Check the sky from a window, door, or safe place. Is it sunny, cloudy, rainy, or windy?
  2. Say the weather: Use a full sentence such as "Today is sunny" or "Today is rainy".
  3. Think about how it feels: Is it warm, hot, cool, or cold?
  4. Guess the season: Say which season it might be (spring, summer, autumn, or winter) and give a reason. For example: "I think it is winter because it is cold".
  5. Clothes check: Say which clothes fit this weather: a coat, a hat, a jumper, or shorts.
  6. Write one sentence: In your notebook, write a short sentence such as "Today is windy and cool".
  7. Use the tracing pad: Choose words like sunny, rainy, or winter from the dropdown and trace them while you say them out loud.

Practice 1 — Match weather to clothes

Use these ideas to draw quick pictures and write short labels.

  1. Draw four small boxes and label them sunny, rainy, windy, and cold.
  2. In each box, draw a child wearing good clothes for that weather (for example: coat and boots for rainy, hat and shorts for sunny).
  3. Write one word under each picture to match the weather.
  4. Say why each choice makes sense, such as "Boots help in the rain" or "A hat helps in the sun".

Practice 2 — Weather diary for three days

Keep a tiny weather diary to see how weather can change.

  1. Make a table with three rows: Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3.
  2. Each day, look at the sky and write one word for the weather (for example: sunny, cloudy, or rainy).
  3. Draw a small weather picture for each day (sun, cloud, raindrops, or wind).
  4. After three days, circle the warmest day and the coldest day.
  5. Tell someone which day you liked best and why.

Practice 3 — Seasons and activities

Think about what people do in each season.

  1. Write the four season names in a column: spring, summer, autumn, winter.
  2. Next to each season, draw or write one fun activity that fits that season (for example: swim for summer, snow play for winter, jump in leaves for autumn).
  3. Use colour to show warm seasons (spring, summer) and cool seasons (autumn, winter).
  4. Tell which season is your favourite and one reason you like it.

Quick Check — Weather and seasons

Answer each question about weather and seasons. Think about the sky, the air, and what people wear and do.

Sunny, rainy, and windy all describe types of weather.

15) Which best matches the idea of a weather diary?

A weather diary is where you write or draw what the weather is like on different days.
