Objective

I can explain that plants need sunlight and water to live and grow. I can tell the difference between a healthy plant and a weak plant.

Materials

• Two small plants (real or pictures)
• One plant that is watered and kept in the sun, and one that is not
• Pencil and notebook or scrap paper

Guided Practice — Compare two plants

You will look at two plants and describe what you see.

1. Place two plants together (or pictures).
2. Point to the healthy plant. Say: “It has green leaves.”
3. Point to the weak plant. Say: “It looks droopy or brown.”
4. Ask: Which plant got sunlight? Which one got water?
5. Write or say one idea: “Plants need sun and water.”
6. Trace words using the pad: plant, sun, water, leaf, grow.

Practice 1 — Spot healthy or weak

Draw or look at two plants. Label one healthy and one weak. Write one reason for each.

• “This plant is healthy. It has green leaves.”
• “This plant is weak. It has dry leaves.”

Practice 2 — What does a plant need?

Write or draw the two things every plant needs to grow.

1. Draw a sun
2. Draw water drops or a watering can

Under each drawing, write the word sun or water.

Practice 3 — What happens if…?

Choose a plant and ask: “What if it gets no sunlight?” or “What if it gets no water?”

• Draw or explain what the plant might look like.
• Use simple words like brown, droopy, weak.
