Mini-lesson — Writing about my family
Your family is the group of people who live with you or
care for you. Families can look different, and that is okay.
You can write sentences that tell who is in your family and what they are like.
Use I and my family words
Use I when you talk about yourself.
Use my to show someone belongs to your family.
Examples: my mom, my dad, my sister, my brother.
Tell one clear idea in each sentence
Each sentence should tell one thing about your family.
Example: My dad is funny.
Next sentence: My mom is kind.
Add kind describing words
You can use simple describing words like kind, funny, tall, helpful.
Example: My sister is helpful.
Choose positive words that make your family feel good.
Use a capital letter and a period
Begin each sentence with a capital letter.
End each sentence with a period.
Read the sentence aloud to check it sounds right.
Ask yourself:
"Does this sentence tell something about my family?
Does it start with I or my and end with a period?"

Guided Practice — Family sentence warm-up
Use this routine to practice writing about your family
in short, clear sentences.
Think of your family:
Picture the people who live with you or care for you.
Say who they are out loud: "Mom, dad, sister, brother, nana…"
Choose one person:
Pick one person to write about first.
Say a simple idea about them, such as
"My mom is kind."
Tap for each word:
Tap the table once for each word in your sentence.
This helps you remember how many words to write.
Trace on the pad:
On the Tracing Pad, choose a family word like
Mom or Dad.
Trace the word carefully, keeping letters on the line.
Write the whole sentence:
On your paper, write your sentence with a
capital letter at the start and a
period at the end.
Repeat for another person:
Choose a different family member and write a
new sentence about them, using kind describing words.
Aim for two or three sentences
that describe your family in a positive way.
