What is AI? Strengths and limits

AI — short for artificial intelligence — is software that learns patterns from huge piles of examples and then uses those patterns to predict what comes next. A chatbot finishes your sentence; an image generator paints what your words describe; a translation tool guesses the most likely sentence in another language. AI is powerful, but it does not understand the world the way a person does.
