Planning backwards from deadlines

Most missed deadlines are not lazy mistakes — they are planning mistakes. People plan forwards from today, hope it works out, and run out of time at the end. Backward planning flips the calendar around. You start at the deadline, write down what must be true the day it is due, and then work backwards step by step until you reach today. The plan tells you what to do this week, this evening, and right now.
