Engineering: Mitigate Natural Hazards

Earthquakes shake the ground. Hurricanes whip the coast. Wildfires race up dry hillsides. These NATURAL HAZARDS have always happened, and we cannot stop them. But engineers and communities CAN reduce the damage they cause. That work is called MITIGATION — using clever design, smart building rules, and quick warnings to keep people and property safer when nature gets rough. Today we will look at the main hazards, the engineering solutions that help, and how to write a real mitigation plan.
