Histograms and Box Plots

A histogram and a box plot are two ways of picturing how a set of numbers is spread out. Both work with one numerical variable (like test scores or heights), but each one shows the data in a different style. Once you can read both, you can compare two groups quickly and describe their shape, center, and spread.

What this lesson teaches

1Read frequency from a histogram and identify the tallest or shortest bin
2Build a box plot from a five-number summary: min, Q1, median, Q3, max
3Find the range and the interquartile range (IQR) from a box plot
4Compare the shape and spread of two data sets using histograms or box plots
