Grade 5 · Writing · Lesson 11

Add Realistic Dialogue

Dialogue is what your characters SAY out loud. Real dialogue does three jobs at once: it tells the reader who is speaking, it shows what is happening between the words, and it moves the story forward. Punctuated cleanly, dialogue brings a flat scene to life. Punctuated sloppily, it confuses the reader. In this lesson you will learn the four rules every dialogue line must follow, and then write a scene that sounds like real people talking.
