A check-in is a planned pause in the middle of a project. You stop building for a moment, look at what you have, and decide what to do next. Pros do this all the time — directors review daily footage, designers ship drafts for feedback, and writers re-read what they wrote yesterday. A short check-in keeps a media project from drifting off course.

Five Questions That Run a Check-in

Every solid check-in answers the same five questions. They take only a few minutes and give you a clear picture of where the project really stands.

1. What I planned — the goal you set when you started.
2. What I built — the parts that exist right now.
3. What works well — the strongest moment so far.
4. What needs more work — the weakest moment so far.
5. Next step — the one concrete thing you will do next.

Use a Rubric to Rate Your Own Work

A rubric is a checklist with levels. It helps you stay honest with yourself instead of guessing how good your work is. Rate each rubric item on a 1-4 star scale, or simply mark "ready" or "needs more work". The score is for YOU — it points to what to fix next, not to a grade.

• Title clarity — does the title tell viewers what to expect?
• Content depth — are the ideas explained, not just listed?
• Visual design — are the colors, fonts, and layout clean?
• Audio quality — is the sound clear, with no buzz or echo?
• Citations — are sources and credits present and correct?
• Final polish — would you proudly show this to a stranger?
