What Is AI? Examples & Limits

Artificial intelligence — AI for short — is software that learns patterns from huge amounts of examples and uses those patterns to do tasks that usually need a person, like recognizing faces, writing sentences, or recommending a video. AI is powerful, but it is not magic and it is not a person. This lesson helps you spot what AI is good at and where it falls short.

How AI Learns

1. A model is fed millions of examples — pictures, sentences, sounds — called training data.
2. It looks for patterns: what tends to come next, what tends to go together.
3. When you give it a prompt, it predicts a likely answer based on those patterns.
4. The output is a guess, not a memory or a fact-check — it can sound right and still be wrong.

Things AI Is Used For

• Voice assistants that turn your speech into actions.
• Recommendation feeds that pick videos, songs, or products you might like.
• Image generators that draw pictures from a written prompt.
• Chatbots that answer questions and draft text.
• Spam filters and language translators that work behind the scenes.

Things AI Is NOT

• It is not a friend or a tutor — it does not know you or care about you.
• It is not always right — it can produce confident-sounding mistakes called hallucinations.
• It cannot replace human judgment for safety, fairness, or kindness decisions.
• A pocket calculator, a paper map, or an alarm clock are NOT AI — they follow fixed rules.
