Reading celebration event

A READING CELEBRATION EVENT is a party with a purpose. It is the day your class stops reading new pages and looks back — at the books that made you laugh, the ones that made you think, and the ones you finished even when they were hard. It is also the day you trade tips, swap books, and hand out a few small awards. Done well, a reading celebration sends every kid home with a new book in their bag and a new title on their want-to-read list.

What this lesson teaches

1Plan a reading celebration with an agenda of welcome, author corner, book swap, open mic, awards, and snack and chat
2Prepare a one-minute open mic reading with a short intro, a strong passage, and a clean ending
3Ask kind audience questions that keep the room warm and the conversation going
4Hand out three friendly awards and reflect on the books that defined the year
