Mini Lesson
A cause-and-effect essay explains why something happens (cause) and what happens as a result (effect). These essays help readers understand real-world events, scientific phenomena, and social issues by showing the connections between actions and outcomes.
Cause vs Effect
- A cause is the reason something happens — it comes BEFORE the event.
- An effect is what happens as a result — it comes AFTER the cause.
- One cause can have multiple effects. One effect can have multiple causes.
Structure of a Cause-and-Effect Essay
- Introduction — introduce the topic and state your thesis (what caused what).
- Cause paragraph — explain the cause with evidence and examples.
- Effect paragraph — describe the effect(s) with supporting detail.
- Second cause/effect pair (optional) — for more complex topics.
- Conclusion — restate the cause-effect relationship and give a closing thought.
Signal Words
- Cause signals: because, since, due to, the reason is, as a result of.
- Effect signals: therefore, as a result, consequently, this led to, so.
Tip: Ask yourself two questions: "Why did this happen?" (cause) and "What happened next?" (effect). Answering both gives you the structure for your essay.
