Mini Lesson

Rules are agreements that help people live and work together safely and fairly. Homes have rules to create a safe place to live and learn. Communities have laws — rules that apply to everyone in a society. Both types of rules exist to protect people, ensure fairness, and build trust. When rules are respected, everyone benefits.

Why Rules Exist

  • Safety — rules prevent accidents and protect people from harm.
  • Fairness — rules ensure everyone is treated equally and has the same opportunities.
  • Order — rules make sure things run smoothly so everyone can learn and live well.
  • Trust — when people follow rules, they build trust with each other.

Home Rules

  • Apply within your home and yard.
  • Set by your parents or the grown-ups who care for you.
  • Examples: No running in the house, Take turns when speaking, Respect family property.
  • Breaking a home rule leads to consequences such as a warning, losing a privilege, or a family talk.

Community Rules (Laws)

  • Apply to everyone in a town, country, or society.
  • Made and enforced by governments and authorities.
  • Examples: Drive on the correct side of the road, Do not litter in public spaces, Stop at a red traffic light.
  • Breaking a law can lead to fines, community service, or more serious legal consequences.
