Mini Lesson

Problems are a normal part of life. Having a clear process for solving them helps us think calmly, consider our options, and make good decisions. A five-step problem-solving process gives you a reliable framework you can use in any situation — during lessons, at home, or with friends.

The Five Problem-Solving Steps

  1. Identify the problem — describe it clearly. What is the issue? Who is involved? What is making it difficult?
  2. Think of possible solutions — brainstorm at least two or three different ideas without judging them yet.
  3. Consider the consequences — for each solution, ask what would happen if you chose it. Who is affected?
  4. Choose the best solution — pick the option with the most positive outcomes for everyone involved.
  5. Reflect on the outcome — after acting, ask yourself: Did it work? What did I learn? What would I do differently?

Why Use a Process?

  • It stops you from reacting impulsively and making things worse.
  • It helps you consider everyone who is affected — not just yourself.
  • Reflecting on the outcome helps you improve your problem-solving over time.

Tip: The most important step is often the last one — reflecting. It is how you turn every problem into a learning opportunity.
