Mini Lesson

A goal is something you want to achieve. Short-term goals are things you can accomplish soon — today, this week, or within a month. Long-term goals take much longer — months or even years of effort. Balancing both types of goals helps you make progress every day while keeping your eyes on a bigger dream.

Short-Term Goals

  • Achievable within a short time — a day, a week, or a month.
  • They are specific, concrete, and easy to track.
  • Examples: "Finish my practice tonight", "Read for 20 minutes each day this week", "Improve my math score by Friday".
  • Short-term goals give you quick wins and keep you motivated.

Long-Term Goals

  • Take months or years of consistent effort to achieve.
  • They often require many smaller steps along the way.
  • Examples: "Become a doctor", "Learn to speak a second language fluently", "Win a science fair next year".
  • Long-term goals give your short-term effort direction and meaning.

Why You Need Both

  • Short-term goals keep you moving forward every day.
  • Long-term goals make sure you are moving in the right direction.
  • Each short-term goal you complete is a step toward your long-term goal.
  • Example: "Read for 20 minutes daily" (short-term) supports "Become a strong reader" (long-term).
