Mini Lesson
Exercise is physical activity that keeps the body strong and healthy. Not all exercise is the same — different types of exercise benefit the body in different ways. Understanding the three main types of exercise helps us plan a balanced fitness routine.
Three Types of Exercise
- Aerobic exercise — activities that raise your heart rate and improve cardiovascular health. Examples: running, swimming, cycling.
- Strength exercise — activities that build and strengthen muscles. Examples: push-ups, lifting weights, sit-ups.
- Flexibility exercise — activities that stretch muscles and improve range of motion. Examples: yoga, stretching, ballet.
Aerobic Exercise
Aerobic exercise uses large muscle groups repeatedly over an extended period. It strengthens the heart and lungs, improves endurance, and helps the body use oxygen efficiently. Activities like running, swimming, and cycling are common aerobic exercises.
Strength Exercise
Strength exercise — also called resistance training — challenges muscles against a force. Over time, this builds muscle size and power. Push-ups, sit-ups, and lifting weights are examples. Stronger muscles protect joints and improve posture.
Flexibility Exercise
Flexibility exercises involve stretching muscles and moving joints through their full range of motion. Yoga, ballet, and regular stretching improve flexibility, reduce the risk of injury, and help the body move more freely.
Body Systems Affected by Exercise
- Cardiovascular system — aerobic exercise strengthens the heart muscle and improves blood circulation.
- Muscular system — strength exercise builds muscle fiber size and increases power.
- Skeletal system — weight-bearing exercise increases bone density and keeps joints healthy.
- Respiratory system — aerobic exercise increases lung capacity and oxygen efficiency.
Tip: aim for at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Include aerobic activity, some strength work, and stretching to keep all your body systems in balance.
