Mini Lesson
Congratulations on completing Grade 4 Math! This review covers all four units: Numbers and Place Value, Operations, Fractions and Decimals, and Geometry and Data.
Units 1 and 2 — Numbers and Operations
- Numbers to 1 million: place value, comparing, ordering, rounding to 10, 100, and 1,000.
- Factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers.
- Multiplication and division of 2- and 3-digit numbers; order of operations; multi-step word problems.
Unit 3 — Fractions and Decimals
- Identify, compare, and find equivalent fractions; add and subtract fractions.
- Mixed numbers and improper fractions.
- Decimals to hundredths; relate fractions to decimals; round and compare decimals.
Unit 4 — Geometry and Data
- Angles (acute, right, obtuse, straight) and polygons; classify triangles and quadrilaterals.
- Area (A = l × w), perimeter (P = 2(l + w)), and volume (V = l × w × h).
- Coordinate grids, metric conversions, symmetry and patterns.
💡
Tip: review any topic that still feels tricky before moving to Grade 5. Strong foundations in place value, fractions, and geometry will support every new concept ahead.
Vocabulary
place value
The value of a digit based on its position in a number.e.g. In 4,562, the digit 5 is in the hundreds place.
equivalent fractions
Fractions that name the same amount with different numerators and denominators.e.g. 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8.
mixed number
A whole number combined with a fraction.e.g. 2 1/2 means 2 wholes and one half.
decimal
A number that uses a decimal point to show parts smaller than 1.e.g. 0.75 means 75 hundredths or 3/4.
polygon
A closed flat shape with straight sides.e.g. Squares, triangles, and pentagons are all polygons.
volume
The amount of space a 3D solid fills, in cubic units.e.g. A box 3 × 4 × 5 cm has volume 60 cubic cm.
