- 3Demonstrate accuracy and speed with basic math facts
📘
Mini Lesson
Math facts are basic number combinations you should know from memory. The faster and more accurately you recall them, the easier all other math becomes.
Multiplication Tables 1–12
- Practice your multiplication tables 1–12 until recall is instant.
- Helpful patterns: any number × 0 = 0; any number × 1 = itself; any number × 10 = add a zero.
- The commutative law means 6 × 7 = 7 × 6, so learning one fact gives you two.
Division as the Inverse of Multiplication
- Division facts are the inverse of multiplication facts.
- If 6 × 7 = 42, then 42 ÷ 7 = 6 and 42 ÷ 6 = 7.
- Every multiplication fact belongs to a fact family of four related facts.
💡
Tip: when you are unsure of a fact, use a near-fact you know and adjust. For 7 × 8, think 7 × 7 = 49, then add 7 to get 56.
Vocabulary
fact family
A group of related multiplication and division facts using the same three numbers.e.g. 6, 7, 42: 6×7=42, 7×6=42, 42÷6=7, 42÷7=6.
product
The result of multiplying two or more numbers.e.g. The product of 7 and 8 is 56.
quotient
The result of dividing one number by another.e.g. 63 ÷ 9 = 7, so the quotient is 7.
commutative law
A rule that says order does not change the product: a × b = b × a.e.g. 6 × 4 = 24 and 4 × 6 = 24.
mental math
Calculating in your head without writing or using a tool.e.g. For 9 × 6, think 10 × 6 − 6 = 54.
