Mini Lesson

A decimal number uses a decimal point to separate the whole number part from the parts that are less than one. The places after the decimal point are called tenths and hundredths.

Tenths: Parts of 10

  • 0.1 = 1/10 — one part out of ten equal parts.
  • The first digit after the decimal point is in the tenths place.
  • 0.7 = 7/10 = "seven tenths" or "zero point seven".

Hundredths: Parts of 100

  • 0.01 = 1/100 — one part out of one hundred equal parts.
  • The second digit after the decimal point is in the hundredths place.
  • 0.35 = 35/100 = 3 tenths + 5 hundredths = "thirty-five hundredths".

Place Value Extended

  • Place value: ones | . | tenths | hundredths.
  • In 2.47: the 2 is in the ones place, 4 is in the tenths place, 7 is in the hundredths place.
  • 0.4 = 4 tenths = 40 hundredths (0.4 = 0.40).

Tip: count the digits after the decimal point. One digit = tenths (out of 10). Two digits = hundredths (out of 100).

Decimal
