Understand Mixed Numbers

A mixed number combines a whole number and a proper fraction, such as 2 3/4 (two and three-quarters). An improper fraction has a numerator that is greater than or equal to its denominator, such as 11/4. Both forms represent the same amount — you can convert freely between them.

What Is a Mixed Number?

• A mixed number has two parts: a whole number and a proper fraction.
• Example: 2 3/4 means two whole units and three-quarters of another unit.
• On a number line, 2 3/4 sits between 2 and 3, closer to 3.

What Is an Improper Fraction?

• An improper fraction has numerator greater than or equal to the denominator.
• Example: 11/4 — the numerator 11 is larger than the denominator 4.
• Improper fractions are useful in calculations and can always be rewritten as mixed numbers.

Convert Improper Fraction to Mixed Number

1. Divide the numerator by the denominator.
2. The quotient becomes the whole number part.
3. The remainder becomes the new numerator over the same denominator.
4. Example: 11/4 — divide 11 by 4: 11 / 4 = 2 remainder 3, so 11/4 = 2 3/4.

Convert Mixed Number to Improper Fraction

1. Multiply the whole number by the denominator.
2. Add the numerator to that product.
3. Write the result over the same denominator.
4. Example: 2 3/4 — (2 x 4) + 3 = 8 + 3 = 11, so 2 3/4 = 11/4.
