Mini Lesson

AI tools can answer questions very quickly, but they are not always correct. Sometimes an AI mixes up facts, invents details, or uses information that is out of date. Before you use an AI-generated answer for your lessons or to share with others, you must fact-check it — just like you would check any source.

Why AI Answers Need Checking

  • AI learns from large amounts of text, but some of that text may be wrong or outdated.
  • AI does not always know when it is unsure — it can sound confident even when it is wrong.
  • AI can "hallucinate" — generate facts, names, or dates that do not exist.
  • A trusted human expert or official source is more reliable for important decisions.

The Five-Step Fact-Checking Process

  1. Get the AI answer — ask your question and read the response carefully.
  2. Identify key claims — pick out the specific facts, numbers, or names the AI states.
  3. Search trusted sources — look for the same information on reliable websites (.gov, .edu, encyclopedias).
  4. Verify — compare the AI's claims against what the trusted sources say.
  5. Conclude — decide whether the AI answer is correct, partially correct, or wrong.

If two or more trusted sources agree with the AI answer, it is very likely to be correct. If no trusted source supports the claim, treat it as unverified.
