What is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence, or AI, is when a computer program is designed to do tasks that normally need human thinking — like recognizing a face, understanding speech, or recommending a film you might enjoy. AI is not magic: it learns by studying huge amounts of data and finding patterns, just like a student learns by studying lots of examples.
