Taking Safe, Organized Research Notes

When you research online, there is a lot of information to read. Taking notes helps you remember what you found, keep track of where you found it, and organize your thinking. Good researchers always write down their sources so they can go back and check.

The Research Note Template

• Topic — What subject are you researching? Write a short title.
• Source — Where did you find this information? Write the website name or URL.
• Key fact — What is the most important piece of information you found? Write it in your own words.
• My question — What do you still want to know? Write one question to guide your next search.

Tips for Good Research Notes

• Do not copy the website word for word — write the fact in your own words.
• Record the source every time so you can check it later.
• Use one note card or page per source to keep things clear.
• Highlight or star the facts that are most useful for your project.
• Keep notes in a private folder — never share your notes file with strangers.
