Practice Expressive Storytelling

Expressive storytelling brings a story to life. When you read aloud — or write — a story, you use emotion words to show how characters feel and pacing cues to control how fast or slow the action moves. Together, these tools make your audience lean in and feel what the characters feel.

What Are Emotion Words?

• Emotion words name exactly how a character feels: terrified, delighted, puzzled, relieved, furious, heartbroken.
• They replace vague words like "happy" or "sad" with precise, vivid feelings.
• Using the right emotion word helps the listener or reader share the character's experience.

What Are Pacing Cues?

• Pacing cues control the rhythm and speed of the story.
• Slow-down cues build suspense: "Slowly...", "One by one...", "Without making a sound..."
• Speed-up cues create urgency: "All at once...", "In a flash...", "Without warning..."
• Pause cues let the reader breathe: "Then — silence.", "She stopped.", "He waited."

The Expressive Sentence Formula

1. Start with a pacing cue to set the scene: "Slowly, the door creaked open."
2. Add the character's emotion word: "...and Maya felt a wave of dread."
3. Connect the emotion to a physical reaction: "Her hands shook and her breath came fast."
4. End with an action or decision that moves the story forward.
