Mini Lesson

Words do not always have to be the same word to mean the same thing — or the opposite. Synonyms are words that mean the same (or nearly the same) thing. Antonyms are words that mean the opposite.

Synonyms — Same Meaning

  • happy → joyful, cheerful, delighted
  • big → large, enormous, huge
  • fast → quick, rapid, speedy
  • sad → unhappy, miserable, gloomy

Antonyms — Opposite Meaning

  • happy ↔ sad
  • hot ↔ cold
  • brave ↔ cowardly
  • ancient ↔ modern

Vocabulary
Synonym
A word that means the same or almost the same as another worde.g. "Happy" and "joyful" are synonyms.
Antonym
A word that means the opposite of another worde.g. "Hot" and "cold" are antonyms.
Meaning
What a word stands fore.g. The meaning of "big" is "large".
Replace
To swap one word for another with a similar meaninge.g. I can replace "happy" with "glad".
Opposite
Completely different from each othere.g. "Up" and "down" are opposites.
