  • A price tag showing $3,450 uses standard form.
  • We read it as "three thousand, four hundred fifty dollars" — that is word form.
  • The value of the 3 in $3,450 is $3,000 — that is place-value thinking.

Distances and Measurements

  • A road sign showing 2,800 km uses standard form.
  • Expanded form: 2,000 + 800.
  • To compare two distances, we look at the highest place value first.

Rounding in Real Life

  • A town has 4,783 people. Rounded to the nearest thousand: 5,000.
  • Rounded to the nearest hundred: 4,800.
  • Rounding helps us make quick estimates without counting every single item.
