Our planet needs our help! When you write about helping the Earth, you are writing an opinion paragraph — you share what you believe and give reasons to show why it matters. Writing about real issues you care about gives your writing genuine power and purpose.

The Three-Part Opinion Paragraph

Opinion sentence — state what you believe: "I think everyone should recycle because it helps protect our planet."
Two reasons — explain why with specific details. Use sentence starters like "First," and "Also,"
Call to action — tell the reader what they can do: "So the next time you have a bottle, put it in the recycling bin!"

Ways Children Can Help the Planet

Recycle paper, plastic, and glass
Turn off lights and water taps when not in use
Plant trees or flowers
Pick up litter in the neighborhood
Use a reusable water bottle
Walk or ride a bike instead of taking a car

Opinion Writing Vocabulary

Opinion

What you believe or think about a topic — an idea you can support with reasonse.g. I think everyone should recycle plastic bottles.

Opinion sentence

The first sentence of an opinion paragraph — it clearly states what the writer believese.g. I think everyone should recycle because it helps protect our planet.

Reason

A specific detail that explains WHY your opinion is true — introduced by words like First and Alsoe.g. First, recycling keeps plastic out of the ocean.

Call to action

The closing sentence that tells the reader exactly what they can do right now to helpe.g. So the next time you have a bottle, put it in the recycling bin!

Recycle

To turn used items like paper, plastic, and glass into new things instead of throwing them awaye.g. We recycle every plastic bottle at our home.
