Mini Lesson

A vacation memory is special because it takes you somewhere new. Good vacation writing uses sensory details — what you saw, heard, smelled, or felt — to make the reader feel like they are right there with you.

The Three-Prompt Plan

  • Where I went — name the place and when you visited.
  • What I saw — describe two or three specific things you noticed.
  • My best moment — the one thing that stands out the most.

Using Sensory Details

  • Do not just say what was there — describe how it felt to your senses.
  • Sight: "The water was so clear I could see the fish swimming."
  • Sound: "The waves crashed loudly on the rocks."
  • Touch: "The sand was warm and soft between my toes."
  • Pick the one sense that captures your memory best.

Best Moment vs. General Detail

  • A general detail: "We swam in the ocean."
  • A best moment: "My best moment was when a tiny wave lifted me off my feet and I laughed so hard!"
  • The best moment is the highlight — make it specific and personal.
  • Include a feeling word to show why it was the best.

Ask yourself: "What did I see, hear, or feel there? Which one moment is my clearest and happiest memory? Can I describe it so the reader feels they were there?"

Vocabulary
Vacation memory
A time you went somewhere away from home with your family and had an experience worth rememberinge.g. Last summer our beach trip was a vacation memory I will keep forever.
Sensory detail
A description of what was seen, heard, smelled, or felt at the place — helps the reader picture the memorye.g. The sand felt warm and soft between my toes.
Topic sentence
The first sentence of a vacation paragraph — it names where you went and whene.g. Last winter my family stayed in a cozy mountain cabin.
Best moment
The single highlight of the vacation — described with specific detail and a feeling word to show why it stood oute.g. My best moment was when a wave lifted me off my feet and I laughed!
Closing sentence
The last sentence — reflects on why the memory is special or will be remembered, rather than restating one detaile.g. That trip gave me a memory I will treasure for the rest of my life.
