How to use: Print first for the main practice. Then use the device to repeat activities and save progress.

Objective

I can choose a title that matches my topic and makes a reader want to read.

Materials

Mini-lesson — A title is a tiny preview

A title is the first thing a reader sees. It gives a clue about what your writing is about.

Great titles do 3 things

  • Match the topic: the title fits the story or paragraph.
  • Use strong words: pick a vivid noun or verb (storm, race, surprise, discover).
  • Stay short: most titles are just a few words.

Try this quick trick

  • Circle the most important word (topic word).
  • Add a strong word: Secret, Big, Lost, Brave.
  • Read it: “Does it sound like my writing?”

Remember: Most titles do not need a period at the end.

Guided Practice — Try a few titles

Choose 3 titles from the Trace menu and write them neatly on paper. Then use the Tracing Pad to practice title words.
