Mini Lesson
Good spellers look for patterns inside words. Once you spot a pattern, you can spell dozens of new words using the same trick.
Vowel Teams
- A vowel team is two vowels side by side that make one long vowel sound.
- The rule: "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking."
- ai / ay — long A: rain, tray, sail, play
- ee / ea — long E: tree, seat, feet, read
- oa — long O: boat, road, coat, toast
Word Families
- A word family is a group of words that share the same ending pattern (called a rime).
- -ight family: light, night, bright, sight
- -ake family: cake, lake, make, take
- Knowing one word in a family helps you spell all the others.
Sight Words
- Sight words are common words that don't always follow phonics rules.
- We learn them by sight — memorize what they look like.
- Examples: said, they, come, some, would, because, friend, people
- Practice them often — you'll use them in almost every sentence you write.

Ask yourself: "Can I see a vowel team? Does this word belong to a family I know? Is this a sight word I should memorize?"
Vocabulary
Vowel team
Two vowels that sit next to each other in a word and make one long vowel sound togethere.g. rain, tree, boat
Long vowel
A vowel that says its own name — A, E, I, O, or Ue.g. rain (long A), tree (long E), boat (long O)
Word family
A group of words that share the same ending spelling pattern, so they rhyme and spell alikee.g. light, night, bright, sight
Sight word
A common word we learn by sight because it doesn't follow regular phonics rulese.g. said, they, because, friend
